We came home Sunday evening to bitter cold (5 degrees and dropping fast). We’d had significant snow fall while we were gone and it had settled down to 16” of unplowed snow on the road the last 8/10s of a mile to our place. The only tracks were the ski tracks of a dear friend who came up last Sabbath to check on our pussies and start a roaring fire in anticipation of bitterly cold weather. Her kindness meant that our house was about 40 degrees when we got home instead of 20! What a blessing! The guys put the “logging cleat chains” on the Excursion and in 4WD low we slowly floundered our way into the house. When I opened my truck door, it swept the top couple of inches off! I’ve not had that happen in the driveway before. The snow pole was at 52”. It’s taken a couple of days for the guys to blow out the road. We’re way past plowing at this point.
Oh yeah, the green disaster..... Juicing has it’s good points. First you learn to like bitter greens. Second, carrots become dessert. Finally, it creates great family time in the kitchen. After talking with a friend in December, we decided pressed juice was best for my needs. Now how to do that without investing $3700 in a Norwalk juicer or about $500 in the alternative that works with a Champion. The old hand cider press my uncle gave us years ago sparked the imagination. The champion juicer, a couple stainless steel pans, a stainless strainer, flour sack cloth and Inventor’s new 12 ton shop press all of which we had on hand and voila... our own juicing system. We even disassemble it to travel. It creates beautiful smooth juice and the pulp is perfectly dry when we are finished. The guys like it --”He Man” kitchen appliances. I like it - (they all help) and the clean up isn’t too bad...usually.
So, Thursday morning, DH was up early juicing for me. Suddenly there was an “explosion” I looked over at DH to see what had happened. He was covered in juicy green pulp, so was the shop press, the window, curtains, walls, ceiling, floors, rug, my desk, computer, refrigerator, doors....you get the drift. It seems the flour sacking had ruptured along the edge in 1 little spot sending a spout of green goo everywhere. DH was able to salvage the juicing, while I spent the entire morning still in my pajamas (something that never happens in this house) cleaning the kitchen top to bottom. The good news. Stuff that hadn’t gotten done since my surgery, got done and I got my upper body workout for the day. The bad news...a paint job is in order as green goo doesn’t come off 15 year old paint well.
Thanks so much for your prayers, emails and cards. They truly sustained us through February days when all we could do was look at each other and say, “what next?” God is faithful through the darkest hours and when we trust Him, there is peace through difficult situations. Caregivers would ask me, “do you have a support network?” What a privilege to tell them, we have an incredible network of support..it’s just a little overwhelming right now!
The Lord continues to go before us. I’m trying to stay behind Him. Reorganizing family life is coming together. Kids are motivated (most days) and God is answering my prayers to provide for their needs when DH and I are not able too.
